Alma 58-60

To be discussed May 18

1. Read Alma 58:1-18. Why were Helaman and his armies "grieved" and "filled with fear" in their "difficult circumstances"? What did they do FIRST in the face of those fears? How did this help?

2. Read Alma 58:13-28. By what means did Helaman, Gid, and Teomner retake the city of Manti? Can you think of a lesson for us in the Nephite strategies?

3. Read Alma 58:29-41. What did Helaman KNOW? What did he NOT know? List what Helaman's "sons" did to distinguish themselves as sons of God (see Alma 58:40).

4. Read Alma 59:1-13. Ezra Taft Benson said, "It is better to prepare and prevent than to repair and repent." How does this quote relate to Helaman's counsel in Alma 59:9? How can we apply it to our own lives?

5. Read Alma 60:1-11. What did Moroni KNOW? What did he NOT know?

6. Read Alma 60:12-23. In Alma 60:15-16, what reasons did Moroni give as to how war could have been avoided? Using the dates at the bottoms of pages 359 and 315, about how many years had Moroni led the Nephite army? Of what did Moroni accuse Pahoran?

BONUS: What does it mean to "cleanse the inner vessel"?

7. Read Alma 60:24-36. Why do you think Moroni used strong language and threats in his letter to Pahoran? In whom did Moroni put his trust?
