Alma 36-38

To be discussed March 23

1. Read Alma 36:1-16, with headnote. To whom are chapters 36-37 addressed? What did Alma exhort his readers to remember? How did Alma learn the doctrine he taught?

2. Read Alma 36:17-30. What caused healing in Alma's heart? What followed that healing?

BONUS: How was Alma "born of God" (vv. 5, 26)?

3. Read Alma 37:1-47. What five things did Alma pass on to his son? What did these five things have in common, or of what might they each be a "type"?

4. Read Alma 37:15-34. According to Alma, what would happen if his son transgressed the commandments? What did the Jaredites lose by transgressing commandments? What do we lose when we break commandments?

5. Read Alma 37:35-47. Using JUST Alma 37:47, what valuable counsel did Alma give Helaman? What was the promise?

BONUS: What did Alma 37 teach you about the value of the scriptures?

6. Read Alma 38:1-5, with headnote. To whom is this counsel directed? Why did Alma have great joy?

7. Read Alma 38:6-15. Alma bears a strong testimony of the Savior in these verses. How did he come to know Christ? List one item of counsel and one warning from Alma 38:10-15.

BONUS: What is the function of a bridle? What is the promise if we "bridle" our passions (see Alma 38:12)?

Note: This video covers Alma 36-37. For the video discussion of Alma 38-39, see next study guide.
