Words of Mormon, Mosiah, Alma

The Book of Mormon: Another Witness

Part 2

"The Principal and commanding figure in the Book of Mormon, from first chapter to last, is the Lord Jesus Christ. In its unparalleled focus on the Messianic message of the Savior of the world, the Book of Moron is rightly referred to as God's 'new covenant' with the house of Israel."

(Jeffrey R. Holland, Christ and the New Covenant, pp.3-4; see also D&C 84:57.)

by Sallie Poet.

This painting depicts the amazing chiastic structure of the book of Mosiah. The complete book of Mosiah is written in chiasmus, which is an ancient Hebrew poetry form. In chiasmus, the most important part of the message is placed in the center of the writing. The center message of the book of Mosiah is spoken by the prophet Abinadi, bound in ropes, who testifies of Christ. Abinadi is in the center of this painting, flanked by King Benjamin, King Mosiah, King Noah, Alma, and Ammon.

After Mormon made an abridgement of the large plates of Nephi, he testified "I cannot write the hundredth part of the things of my people." (Words of Mormon 1:5.) How did Mormon choose which parts to preserve in his abridgement of the sacred writings? How might we increase our personal theological understanding by a study of this inspired canon? Through Isaiah, the Lord said, "I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder." (Isaiah 29:14.) As we ponder the first part of Mormon's abridgement "with real intent, having faith in Christ" (Moroni 10:4), may the Lord proceed to do a marvelous work and a wonder in our hearts. In class this year, our goal is to "seek learning, even by study and also by faith." (D&C 109:7.) By so doing, Mormon's abrigement will enlarge our souls and enrich our days.
