Mormon 4-6

To be discussed March 1

1. Read Mormon 4:1-5.

According to Mormon, why were the Nephites unsuccessful in their attack against the Lamanites in the 363rd year? Who stirs up men's hearts to bloodshed?

2. Read Mormon 4:6-14.

Why did the wars continue even after there were heavy casualties on both sides? Why were the Lamanites victorious at Desolation and Teancum? How were prisoners treated?

3. Read Mormon 4:15-23.

Approximately how many years of detente did the people have after the battle of 367? From Mormon 4:18, what important turning point had been reached in 375? Why did Mormon go to the hill Shim?

4. Read Mormon 5:1-7.

Why do you think Mormon decided to return to the battlefield, knowing the Nephites were unlikely to succeed? (See also Mormon 3:12.) If Mormon was about 15 when he led the army in 326, how old was he in 380?

BONUS: In Mormon 5:2 we learn that Mormon was "without hope." In Mormon 3:12 he said he was "without faith." What kind of faith and hope did he lack?

5. Read Mormon 5:8-24

For whom did Mormon leave his record? Why? What is the fate of all who reject Christ and allow themselves to be "led about by Satan'?

BONUS: What do you think it means to be "in the hands of God"? (See Mormon 5:23.)

6. Read Mormon 6:1-10.

What was Mormon's strategy in gathering his people to Cumorah? Why did he hide the records?

7. Read Mormon 6:11-22.

Add up the number of warriors from all the Nephite armies. How many Nephites survived? In spite of his anguish over the fall of his people, in whom did Mormon place his hope and faith?

O, Ye Fair Ones
