Helaman 7-9

To be discussed October 12

1. Read Helaman 7:1-11, with headnote.

Whose history is recorded in Helaman 7-16? From Helaman 7:5, list examples of bad laws enacted by the ruling Gadiantonites. How long did it take for the Nephite rulers to legislate iniquity?

BONUS: Why did the people gather to witness Nephi's prayer?

2. Read Helaman 7:12-29.

According to Nephi, why had God forsaken the Nephites? What did Nephi prophesy would happen if the people did not repent?

3. Read Helaman 8:1-15.

How and why did the evil judges stir up the people to anger? Why did the angry mob allow Nephi to continue preaching?

4. Read Helaman 8:16-28.

Which prophets did Nephi list by name as witnesses of the coming Messiah? How did Nephi suggest his listeners prepare for the future? Why was the judge murdered and how did Nephi know about it?

5. Read Helaman 9:1-11.

From Helaman 9:5, why did fear come upon the five Nephites who went to the judgment seat? What did those who found them assume?

6. Read Helaman 9:12-20.

What led to Nephi's arrest? Why do you think the five defended him? What did the judges really want? (Hint: See footnote to Helaman 9:20)

7. Read Helaman 9:21-41.

From Helaman 9:39, list the differing opinions of the people regarding Nephi. Why don't prophets usually give signs?
