Helaman 10-12

To be discussed October 19

1. Read Helaman 10:1-11.

From Helaman 10:4, why was the Lord pleased with Nephi? With what did the Lord promise to bless him because of his faithfulness? From Helaman 10:2-3, what was Nephi doing before he received this blessing?

2. Read Helaman 10:12-19.

What did Nephi do immediately after he received the word of the Lord? Why wasn't his message well received?

3. Read Helaman 11:1-8.

Why might Nephi believe it was better for man to be punished by famine than by the sword? What caused the people to turn to God and His prophet?

4. Read Helaman 11:9-21.

From this scripture block, give three evidences that the people had truly repented.

BONUS: How long did the famine last? Do you think Nephi was impacted by the draught?

5. Read Helaman 11:22-38.

How many years of prosperity passed between the end of the famine and the beginning of "much strife"? List the results of the return of the Gadianton robbers.

6. Read Helaman 12:1-12.

(This chapter is a note of commentary from Mormon.) What kinds of "unsteadiness" (v.1) do we see today? In what ways are we mortals sometimes "dumber than dirt"?

7. Read Helaman 12:13-26.

Ezra Taft Benson famously taught, "God will have a humble people. Either we can choose to be humble or we can be compelled to be humble." How can we choose humility?
