3 Nephi 26-27

To be discussed January 25

1. Read 3 Nephi 26:1-5, with chapter headnote.

In 3 Nephi 26 1 and 3, and in the headnote to chapter 26, we are told that Jesus "expounded" all things. What does it mean to "expound"? How had the people been prepared to receive this information?

2. Read 3 Nephi 26:6-14.

Mormon again explains in 3 Nephi 26:6 that he cannot write even a hundredth part of the things Jesus taught. Why did he include this "lesser" version if the plates of Nephi contain a greater portion of the record? Why do you think Jesus enabled the children to teach their parents?

3. Read 3 Nephi 26:15-21.

Why might the people have been forbidden to record the words of their babes? In what ways did the people enjoy a Zion society?

BONUS: At this point in Nephite history, had all the people been baptized?

4. Read 3 Nephi 27:1-12.

What indication do we have that the Nephites were not completely living in a Zion society?

BONUS: From 3 Nephi 27:5-11, give four (or more) reasons why Christ's church should be called after His name.

5. Read 3 Nephi 27:13-21.

NOTE: 3 Nephi 27:13-21 is written in Chiasmus, a Hebrew literary form in which thoughts are stated, then related in an inverted form. For example, Chrsit used the words "my gospel" in verses 13 and 21. What other parallel words or thoughts can you find in this passage? What would you consider the center point of the chiasmus?

6. Read 3 Nephi 27:22-27.

Why is it important for us to keep records? List what kinds of records we should keep.

7. Read 3 Nephi 27:28-33.

Why was the Lord filled with joy? What caused Him sorrow?

BONUS: 3 Nephi 27:27 is an oft-quoted scripture mastery verse. Using verses in 3 Nephi 26-27, how can we become more like the Savior?
