4 Nephi

To be discussed February 8

NOTE: Fourth Nephi illustrates two extremes in civilization. The first half of the book gives us details about how a Zion society is structured. The second half shows how a great civilization can rapidly decline.

1. Read 4 Nephi 1:1-5.

Who formed the Church of Christ in the 34th year after Jesus' birth? What percentage of the people were converted? Once they were converted, how did they treat one another?

BONUS: What do you think it means to be a partaker of the "heavenly gift"? See also Ether 12:8.

2. Read 4 Nephi 1:6-13.

List some of the results of the continuing righteousness of the people.

3. Read 4 Nephi 1:14-21.

Why was there no contention in the land? What else was missing? What caused a small division among the people?

4. Read 4 Nephi 1:22-28.

List steps to destruction from 4 Nephi 1:23-28.

BONUS: Why do you think so many false churches sprang up?

5. Read 4 Nephi 1:29-34.

Why did the anti-Christ faction reject the Lord's anointed and the miracles they performed?

6. Read 4 Nephi 1:35-41

In what year did the "great division" occur among the people? According to 4 Nephi 1:38, the "Lamanites" did not "dwindle in unbelief," but they did "willfully rebel against the gospel of Christ." What is the difference?

7. Read 4 Nephi 1:42-49.

What caused the disciples to sorrow? Who kept the records after Amos died? What did he do with them?

BONUS: Review 4 Nephi 1:1-4 and 16-17. List attributes of a converted people.
