2 Nephi 9-10

To be discussed January 14

In your reading, try to identify doctrines of Christ by looking for the main message of the writer. In other words, what basic principle(s) of the gospel might the writer want you to recognize and apply in your own life? What is his purpose in writing?

1. Read 2 Nephi 9:1-9. Joseph Fielding Smith wrote, "The Ninth chapter of Second Nephi should be carefully read by every person seeking salvation." Reading through these verses with that comment in mind, list key words or thoughts expressed by Jacob regarding salvation.

2. Read 2 Nephi 9:10-19. 2 Nephi 9:10, 13, 17, and 19 begin with the word, "O." Each verse (along with verses 8 and 20) expresses gratitude for one of the characteristics and attributes of the Savior. List these attributes and describe how each qualifies Jesus Christ to be our Savior. (Feel free to include verses 8 and 20 in your list!)

BONUS: According to 2 Nephi 9:8-10, what would happen to our SPIRITS if there were no resurrection of the BODY?

3. Read 2 Nephi 9:20-26; Article of Faith 4. Whose pains did Christ endure as part of his infinite atonement? Who does the atonement cover? What is our part in obtaining salvation?

4. Read 2 Nephi 9:27-39. What are some attitudes and actions that prevent us from receiving all the blessings of the Atonement?

5. Read 2 Nephi 9:40-54 with Mormon 6:17. In 2 Nephi 9:41, 42, 45, 50, and 51, Jacob begs his readers to "come." List where or to whom Jacob recommends we come, and why.

6. Read 2 Nephi 10:1-14. In chapter 10, Jacob returns to his themes of "gathering" and "covenants," about which he wrote in 2 Nephi 6-8. How might an understanding of Christ's Atonement (as discussed in 2 Nephi 9) better prepare us to understand how we can become God's covenant people, and be gathered at the last day?

7. Read 2 Nephi 10:15-25. List promises to gentile nations in the Americas in the latter days from 2 Nephi 10:10-18. From 2 Nephi 10:23-24, what does Jacob ask his readers to DO?
