1 Nephi 19-22

- To be discussed November 12

As you read this passage, please look for doctrines of Christ. Underline, note, or record as you read key doctrines

1. Read 1 Nephi 19:1-7. From 1 Nephi 19:1, list the things Nephi engraved on the plates he had made. According to 1 Nephi 19:5, why did Nephi include the more sacred things in his record? [Note: In 1 Nephi 19:2, "first plates" = large plates; "these plates" = small plates. See also "A Brief Explanation about the Book of Mormon" at the front of your Book of Mormon, after "Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith."]

2. Read 1 Nephi 19:8-24. What details of the Savior's mission did Nephi include in chapter 19? When will the Lord remember His covenants with Israel? Why did Nephi read to his brethren from the plates of brass (especially the writings of Isaiah)?

3. Read 1 Nephi 20:1-22, with chapter headnote. The headnote for 1 Nephi 20 says, "The Lord reveals his purposes to Israel...." What are the Lord's purposes? Why has Israel been slow to "hearken and hear"? List blessings and curses from 1 Nephi 20:17-22.

BONUS: Compare 1 Nephi 20 with Isaiah 48. Can you find any significant differences?

4. Read 1 Nephi 21:1-13, with chapter headnote. Who is addressed in this chapter? List passages that give you hope.

5. Read 1 Nephi 21:14-26, with footnote 24a. From 1 Nephi 21:16, what did the Lord say would always remind Him of His people? What helps you remember the Savior? List promises from 1 Nephi 21:22-26.

BONUS: Compare 1 Nephi 21 with Isaiah 49. Can you find any significant differences?

6. Read 1 Nephi 22:1-14, with chapter headnote. Note: 1 Nephi 22 is Nephi's commentary on Isaiah 48-49, which he has just quoted. From 1 Nephi 22:12, list four purposes for the Lord to "make bare his arm," or show His power to men.

7. Read 1 Nephi 22:15-31. When will Satan "have no more power over the hearts of the children of men"? Cross-reference this verse to 1 Nephi 22:26. What needs to happen before Satan can be bound?
