BYU Discussion on 1 Nephi 11-12

1 Nephi 10-12:

to be discussed October 22

As you read this passage, please look for doctrines of Christ. Underline, note, or record as you read key doctrines.

1. Read 1 Nephi 10:1-16. List details of Christ's ministry as foretold by Lehi. According to Lehi, what would happen to mankind if they did not rely on the Savior?

2. Read 1 Nephi 10:17-22. Nephi mentions the Holy Ghost three times in this passage, once in 1 Nephi 10:17, once in 1 Nephi 10:19, and again in 1 Nephi 10:22. What can we learn about the Holy Ghost just from these three verses?

3. Read 1 Nephi 11:1-11. What happened when Nephi sat pondering? What can we do to more diligently ponder the words of the prophets?

BONUS: List the elements of Nephi's vision. Why do you think these particular images were brought to his mind? Read Revelation 22:1-2 and Ezekiel 47:12. What do John the Revelator and Ezekiel say about the leaves of the tree?

4. Read 1 Nephi 11:12-25. Look up the word "condescension." How did Nephi learn about the condescension of God? How did he know the meaning of the tree?

5. Read 1 Nephi 11:26-36. What is the ultimate example of the Savior's love? What is the opposite of that love, as represented by the great and spacious building?

6. Read 1 Nephi 12:1-10. 1 Nephi 12 is a continuation of Nephi's vision, including how Lehi's dream would be fulfilled among Nephi's posterity. List key elements in Nephi's vision from 1 Nephi 12:1-10.

7. Read 1 Nephi 12:11-23. Ultimately, what would destroy the Nephite nation? How might an understanding of Lehi's dream have helped the Nephites? How is it a type for today?

BONUS: 1 Nephi 12 is written in the Hebrew poetry form called inverse parallelism, or chiasmus. In this form of poetry, the most important message is usually in the center of the parallelism. What is the key message in this chapter? (Hint: See 1 Nephi 12:11-12.)
