1 Nephi 16-18

to be discussed November 5

As you read this passage, please look for doctrines of Christ. Underline, note, or record as you read key doctrines

1. Read 1 Nephi 16:1-17 (with footnote 13a). Why do the guilty take the truth to be hard? What did Nephi exhort his brethren to do? What seems to have been the direct result of their obedience?

2. Read 1 Nephi 16:18-39 (with footnote 34a). What caused Laman, Lemuel, and even Lehi to murmur? What events led to the new revelation given to Lehi's family through the strange brass ball? What can we learn about revelation through studying this story? (See also Alma 37:6-8.)

BONUS: What did Nephi DO (which his brethren did not do) to alleviate the hunger of his people?

SUGGESTED MARKING: Underline or box in the words "And thus we see" in 1 Nephi 16:29 and 1 Nephi 17:3.

3. Read 1 Nephi 17:1-16. List three things the Lord will do for us if we keep His commandments. How many years did Lehi's family wander in the wilderness? What was Nephi's question to the Lord after he was instructed to build a ship?

4. Read 1 Nephi 17:17-34. Why do you think Laman and Lemuel lacked faith? What examples of faith did Nephi give in his discourse to his brethren?

5. Read 1 Nephi 17:35-55. Why did the Lord send fiery flying serpents to the children of Israel? Why did the Israelites reject the offer of healing? How did the power of the Spirit of God manifest itself to Nephi's brethren?

6. Read 1 Nephi 18:1-16. In 1 Nephi 18:3, Nephi reports that he "did go into the mount oft" to pray. In fact, this is the third time Nephi mentions going to a mountain to pray (see also 1 Nephi 11:1, 1 Nephi 17:7). Why might he have gone to a mountain? What is the mountain of the Lord today?

BONUS: How did Nephi's brethren feel when the compass stopped working?

7. Read 1 Nephi 18:17-25. What finally softened the hearts of Laman and Lemuel? Do you see any evidence of the attribute of charity in their hearts?

BONUS: What made the promised land a land of promise?

"Instead of murmuring, Nephi simply went to work and made another bow. Murmuring wastes time, lengthens one's journey, and hardens one's heart... God may not always stop bows from breaking, but he does help in the construction of new ones."
