2 Nephi 1 - to be discussed November 19

As you read this passage, please look for doctrines of Christ. Underline, note, or record as you read key doctrines

1. Read 2 Nephi 1:1-4. From these verses, what two examples of God's mercy did Lehi rehearse to his sons?

2. Read 2 Nephi 1:5-8. To whom are the Americas consecrated, or to whom has the Lord covenanted that they should inhabit these lands? Why would the Lord keep the existence of these lands a secret from the rest of the world?

3. Read 2 Nephi 1:9-12. List promises associated with Lehi's "land of promise." List the consequences should inhabitants of this land "dwindle in unbelief," or forget the Lord and their covenants.

4. Read 2 Nephi 1:13-18. What is the sleep of hell? What assurance did Lehi have that his soul had been redeemed from this hell? How did he hope his sons would receive his testimony?

BONUS: Read Alma 34:16, Mormon 6:17 and D&C 6:20 with 2 Nephi 1:15. How did the embrace each prophet describes reflect their love for the Savior? How did it symbolize the Savior's love for them?

5. Read 2 Nephi 1:19-23. From 2 Nephi 1:21-24, list Lehi's counsel to his sons, on how they might become men (see v. 21).

6. Read 2 Nephi 1:24-27. Continue your list from verses 21-24, giving Lehi's counsel to his sons in your own words. What "power" might Lehi have been talking about in 2 Nephi 1:26-27?

7. Read 2 Nephi 1:28-32. What did Lehi's sons have to do in order to receive his "first blessing"?  Use the footnote to 2 Nephi 1:28a for information on what that first blessing was. What did Lehi promise Zoram? What does Zoram's blessing teach us about adoption into the house of Israel?
