1 Nephi 1-3:
to be discussed September 24
As you read this passage, please look for doctrines of Christ. Underline, note, or record as you read key doctrines.
1. Read 1 Nephi 1:1-15. How was Nephi prepared from an early age to receive revelation? List the things Lehi DID before he received his vision, then list the elements of that vision.
2. Read 1 Nephi 1:15-20. What did Lehi do because of his revelatory experience? What is Nephi's "mission statement" in 1 Nephi 1:20? Who receives the "tender mercies" of the Lord?
3. Read 1 Nephi 2:1-13. In what way(s) did Lehi show his obedience? How might this have impacted the attitudes of his children?
4. Read 1 Nephi 2:14-24. How did Nephi's prayer in 1 Nephi 2:16 change his heart and his life?
5. Look at Map 2 in Bible Maps. Approximately how many miles is it from Jerusalem to Ezion-geber? If Lehi's family traveled an average of 20 miles per day, and went three days' journey past Ezion-geber (see 1 Nephi 2:5-6), how far did they go after leaving Jerusalem before camping in the valley of Lemuel? (See also "Possible Route Taken by Lehi's Family.")
6. Read 1 Nephi 3:1-20. In 1 Nephi 3:1, Nephi reports that he "returned from speaking with the Lord...." Is there a difference between speaking "with" the Lord and speaking "to" the Lord? How might this method of prayer have helped Nephi become more obedient (1 Nephi 3:7)? From 1 Nephi 3:19-20, list reasons why the brass plates were important.
7. Read 1 Nephi 3:21-31. List any examples you can find of tender mercies from the Lord in these verses. What did Laman and Lemuel do after the angel had departed?

Quote: "Ponder deeply and diligently in the scriptures and in the words of living prophets. Persist in prayer for the Holy Ghost to reveal to you the nature of God the Father and His Beloved Son. Plead that the Spirit will show you what the Lord wants you to do. Plan to do it. Promise Him to obey. Act with determination until you have done what He asked. And then pray to give thanks for the opportunity to serve and to know what you might do next."
