2 Nephi 29-31

To be discussed March 17

In your reading, try to identify doctrines of Christ by looking for the main message of the writer. In other words, what basic principle(s) of the gospel might the writer want you to recognize and apply in your own life? What is his purpose in writing?

1. Read 2 Nephi 29:1-6. Between the "dashes" in 2 Nephi 29:1 and 2 Nephi 29:3, the Lord reveals to Nephi several reasons why He will proceed "to do a marvelous work among them" (the Gentiles). List as many of these reasons as you can find. How can we be the "hissers" or tellers? How can we thank the Jews for the Bible?

2. Read 2 Nephi 29:7-14. In 2 Nephi 29:7-11, find four reasons why we should study the Book of Mormon. How has the Lord shown modern Israel that He remembers His covenant people forever?

3. Read 2 Nephi 30:1-7. According to 2 Nephi 30:2, with whom will the Lord make covenants? What two groups did Nephi prophesy would come to a belief in Jesus Christ and his gospel through the words of the Book of Mormon in the latter days?

4. Read 2 Nephi 30:8-18. In 2 Nephi 30:10, the Lord tells us there will be "a great division among the people." How will the people be divided? What has to happen to one group before the other group has peace, and Satan will no longer "have power over the hearts of men"?

5. Read 2 Nephi 31:1-6. What did Nephi say he wanted to speak about as part of his last record to his people and to us? Note the "if," "then" language in 2 Nephi 31:5. Why did Christ need to be baptized? Why do we?

6. Read 2 Nephi 31:7-15. Nephi tells us that the Savior humbled himself and set the example for all men. How many times can you find the word "follow" in 2 Nephi 31:10-13? In what specific ways are we asked to follow Christ?

BONUS: In 2 Nephi 31:11 and 15, Nephi records messages directly from the Father. In 2 Nephi 31:12 and 14, he quotes the Son. This is a rare opportunity for us to hear the voice of the Father and the Son together within just a few verses. What does their combined message have to do with the Doctrine of Christ? What did the Father promise in 2 Nephi 31:15?

7. Read 2 Nephi 31:16-21.  Why was Nephi given such a specific vision of the life and ministry of the Savior? List the ways in which we are encouraged to "press forward."

BONUS: Read 2 Nephi 31:15 with 2 Nephi 31:20-21. Give specific examples of what we need to do to have eternal life. What is "the only and true doctrine of the Father , and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost"?
