Study Guide:

1. Read the Bible Dictionary entry, "Jeremiah." About how long did Jeremiah prophesy in Judea? List three major themes in Jeremiah's writing.

 

 

2. Read Jeremiah 1:1-19 (with footnotes 6b, 13a, 18a). When was Jeremiah ordained to be a prophet in Judah? How did he feel about his calling? List the six verbs in Jeremiah 1:10 that describe Jeremiah's mission.

 

 

3. Read Jeremiah 2:1-8, 12-14, 20-22, and 31-35. What are the "two evils" pronounced by the Lord against Judah? To what did the Lord compare the people of Judah?

 

 

BONUS: Read Jeremiah 36:1-32. What happened to Jeremiah's writings? Why do you think the Lord commanded him to write in the first place?

 

 

4. Read Jeremiah 3:12-19, Jeremiah 4:1-4. Where does hope for Judah lie?

 

 

5. Read Jeremiah 7:1-16 (with footnote 5a). What promises did the Lord deliver regarding the temple in these verses?

 

 

6. Read Jeremiah 16:9-21 and Jeremiah 17:5-7. What did the Lord say He would cause to cease in Jerusalem? Why? Give two ways in which the prophecies in Jeremiah 16:14-16 have been fulfilled.

 

 

BONUS: List metaphors and similies used in Jeremiah 17:1-18 and Jeremiah 18:1-6. How do these word images help you better understand the fate of Judah?

 

 

7. Read Jeremiah 29:4-14, Jeremiah 30:8-11, and Jeremiah 31:27-40. What very specific promise did the Lord make to Judah in Jeremiah 29:4-14? What new covenant would the Lord make with Israel and Judah? (See Jeremiah 31:33-34.)
