Isaiah II (Isaiah 35-66)

NOTE: Last week we looked at the themes of Apostasy and Judgment in the first 34 chapters of Isaiah. The general themes we will discuss in the last half of Isaiah are "Restoration" and "Salvation." All four themes can be found throughout the book of Isaiah, but we will look at Restoration in chapters 35-59 and Salvation in chapters 60-66.

1. Read Isaiah 35:1-10 (with chapter heading, footnotes 1c, 6a, 7b). According to the chapter heading for Isaiah 35, when will the events in this chapter take place? From Isaiah 35:1-2, why will the desert blossom and rejoice? From all of Isaiah 35, list ways in which the gospel HEALS.

2. Read Chapter headings for Isaiah 36, 37, 38, and 39; also Hezekiah's prayer in Isaiah 37:16-20 and the Lord's response in Isaiah 37:33-35. Why did the Lord protect and defend Judah against the Assyrian assault?

3. Read Isaiah 41:8-20 (with footnotes 8a, 14a, 15a, 19a,b,c) and Isaiah 42:5-8. List the Lord's covenant promises to Israel in these passages.

4. Read Isaiah 43: 1-4 (with footnote 1a), and Isaiah 44:1-8 (with footnote 3a). Why should Israel not fear the armies of the world and the worldly?

5. Read Isaiah 49:5-26. In Isaiah 49:5-12, Isaiah encourages Israel to repent. From Isaiah 49:13-26, list three excuses Israel makes for her unrepentant state and how the Lord answers each.

6. Read Isaiah 62:1-12 (with footnotes 4c,d, 9a). Find examples of the four "C"s in Isaiah 62: Christ, Covenants, Current Events, Coming Events. NOTE: The JST changes "thy sons" in verse 5 to "God." What might the "standard" mentioned in Isaiah 62:10 represent?

7. Read Isaiah 66:5-24 (with the chapter heading, footnotes 7a, 12a, 16b, 17a). What do you think it means when the Lord says Israel, as a nation, shall be born in a day (see chapter heading and vv. 7-10)? List great blessings promised to the righteous in Isaiah 66.
