1. Read 1 Samuel 16:1-13, Bible Dictionary entry, "Anoint." Using 1 Samuel 16:1-2, describe the relationship between Samuel and Saul. What happens when there is no unity between a prophet, a priest, and a king?
BONUS: Samuel is told by the Lord to fill his horn with oil. How might this have prepared Samuel? Why must sanctification precede sacrifice?
2. Read 1 Samuel 17:32-58. What gave David the confidence he needed to deliver Israel from bondage to the Philistines? How is David a "type" of Christ?
3. Read 1 Samuel 18:1-16 with footnote 10a. Why did Saul wish David daed? NOTE: Saul spent 14 years warring against David. Why do you think the Lord allowed his anointed (David) to be hunted and exiled for so long?
4. Read 1 Samuel 19:12-24; 1 Samuel 21:1-9; 1 Samuel 23:13-18; 1 Samuel 26:5-12 with footnotes 5a, 7a; 1 Samuel 26:21-25. What indication do we have that the Lord protected David?
BONUS: Read Psalms 3 and Psalm 4. How do sacrifices of righteousness bring the Lord's safety?
5. Read 2 Samuel 5:4-5. How long was David king of Judah? How long was he king over all of Judah and Israel?
6. Read 2 Samuel 7:1-29 with footnote 8a. In this chapter, David offers to build a house of the Lord. What did the Lord promise David? How did David feel about these promises?
7. Read 2 Samuel 11:1-5, 26-27 and 2 Samuel 12:1-14. Give at least three consequences of David's sin, as prophesied by Nathan.
BONUS: Look up 2 Samuel 13:26-29; 2 Samuel 18:14-15; 1 Kings 2:25; 2 Samuel 15:6-14; 2 Samuel 16:11, 21-22; 2 Samuel 12:15-18. Look for fulfillments of the prophecies of Nathan regarding the consequences of David's sins.
