Study Guide

1. Read the chapter heading for Matthew 20. What did Jesus teach his disciples after he gave them the parable of the laborers in the vineyard?

2. Read Matthew 20:1-2. To what is the kingdom of heaven compared in this parable? When did the householder hire his first laborers? How much did he contract to pay them?

3. Read Matthew 20:3-7. List the times at which the householder went out to hire additional laborers. What kind of pay were they promised? Why might a householder need more workers?

4. Read Matthew 20:8-12. What amount was each laborer paid? Did this seem fair to those who had worked all day? Does it seem fair to you?

5. Read Matthew 20:13-16. How did the householder explain the payment of wages to those who murmured? Rephrase the statement in Matthew 20:15, "Is thine eye evil because I am good?"

6. Read D&C 33:2-3. Who does the householder represent? Who are the laborers?

7. What role does "envy" or "pride" play in the feelings of the early laborers? What role does faith play in this parable? Diligence? The Atonement?
